What is a TARIC (Harmonisation) code?

A TARIC code, sometimes referred to as a Harmonisation code or Commodity code, is a code which is used to classify the type of goods you are importing/exporting. The code for Ireland will contain 10 digits, this may vary for other countries. It is required in all customs declarations.

Why is a TARIC code needed?

It is needed as part of customs declarations to classify the item so the customs body in the destination country have an accurate record of what is sent, and can calculate if customs duty and VAT or other duties apply to the item.

Using the wrong code can result in delays so it is important to ensure you are using the correct code e.g. if you use a code that applies a 0% duty rate to an item which should have been charged duties it can result in the delay of item and additional customs clarification may be required.
